Hi! I’m Emma and I am mad about colour, pattern and all things bright and beautiful. I am on a mission to empower and inspire you to take risks and try new things in interiors; to be brave with colour and pattern and to help you create spaces in which you love to live.
I am fascinated with how colour can make us feel and that’s what truely leads my designs; I want to know how you want to feel when you live in your spaces. Colour has such an impact on our lives - have you ever wondered why you feel really great when you put on your favourite dress or shirt? I’d bet it was because the colour of it made you feel good! Or when you enter certain restaurants or cafes you get “the good vibes”? Yup, colour again! (and maybe that delicious coffee aroma calling your name also helps hehe).
I have always loved interiors and design and was able to deep dive into product design through my last business, The Raspberry Room. The process of designing product kept leading me back to my first love… interiors. So, I have finally taken the plunge and listened to my intuition and opened The Deane Studio.
Meet Emma
How did I get here?
Not in the traditional way, that’s for certain! After school I went to University in Melbourne and achieved a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) before moving to Perth to study for a Grad Dip in Secondary Education, majoring in English and Drama. After teaching for over a decade I left the profession to focus on having our children. I then started a number of different product design businesses that allowed me to flex my creative muscles whilst still being at home with young children.
With my youngest off to full time school, it was time to get serious about what I really wanted to focus on, and, it was pretty clear that design was top of the list!
After experimenting with colour and pattern within the product design space it was clear that my heart lay in interior design and, most importantly, working with people to help create spaces they loved. The time I had spent away from education helped me realise that I actually really love teaching… just not in a traditional school setting.
Which leads me to now! I am currently studying for a Diploma in Interior Design which I will finish at the beginning of 2025, and I am ready to help you embrace colour and empower and inspire you to create spaces you love to live in!
Signature Style
My signature style is all about embracing colour and pattern, but, more importantly, recognising how it makes us feel. Although I love a bright and bold palette, this doesn’t mean I am a maximalist by any stretch (although I do love a pattern clash every now and then). I identify strongly with mid-century shapes - I am obsessed with timber and the shapes of “legs” in furniture, and I love the practicality of a solid piece of well made furniture. I gain a huge amount of inspiration from the clashing patterns, strong colour combinations and interesting shapes of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
I would call my style “considered” when it comes to colour - I love a bold statement whether it be on the walls, through the furniture or even on the ceiling, but one must strike the right balance of feeling comfort in a space without feeling overwhelmed.
My spaces feel layered and are curated using unique and interesting pieces (I am a bower bird and a collector of beautiful things) so I can make your spaces truely one-of-a-kind; no cookie cutter rooms here!
Design Work
I have owned a number of small businesses over the years that have focussed on product design. Lovebug Designs was an original and unique textile business that infused pattern and colour into children’s toys. I drafted my own patterns for products, sourced locally designed fabric and then made the products onsite.
The Raspberry Room was originally a party concept store that was forced to pivot into sustainability due to new laws in Western Australia. This was a crucial turning point for me as a designer as it was through designing sustainable products and adhereing to strict guidelines, that I gained the confidence to even consider that interiors were a possible path for me.
Let’s work together!
